Chimpanzee Intelligence

It may seem like the Chimpanzee is always goofing around, but even during plan they are learning. They are very curious creatures and have amazing abilities to grasp what is going on around them. It is this level of intelligence that has helped them to thrive in a variety of environments for millions of years. It has also made them a top interest to researchers out there that want to know how all of this connects them to humans.

Through a tremendous amount of research it is a well known fact that Chimpanzees are highly intelligent animals. They have the ability for various forms of communication and for being able to learn. They are able to adapt to different situations based on problem solving rather than instinct. Most animals don’t have that ability which is why it can be so hard for them to adjust to a changing environment around them.

To find out just how intelligent they are numerous tests have been conducted. They have shown Chimpanzees can push the boundaries and learn very complex things. They are closely related to humans so trying to teach them common skills is part of the testing. In many areas including memorizing, problem solving, and even planning they do an outstanding job.

Just like with humans though there are different levels of intelligence recognized. One Chimpanzee can catch on to what is taught fast and move on to more advanced things than the next. The same is true of the human brain when it comes to the way we learn and how fast we learn. Overall though the Chimpanzee has intelligence that surpasses most animals out there.

In the 1960’s observations by Jane Goodall showed us that the Chimpanzee is able to use various environmental items as tools. This includes sticks for digging and defense as well as to get into termite mounds, rocks to throw at danger, and even leaves to use in the water to drink from it. The fact that they are able to use such items in the same ways that humans would strongly so how intelligent they are.

The hunting strategies that are implemented also show a high level of intelligence as they are complex. They cooperate with each other and all members involved in that hunt are given a role. There is a hierarchy of order and that also influences how the meat from the hunt is divided. The way in which they can create their socializing and follow that order is very intertwined.

Deceptive behaviors are noted of the Chimpanzee and that also shows us how intelligent they are. They are able to deceive each other in order to get food, shelter, and even in captivity to escape their environment. They have to be closely watched due to the fact that they can engage in such behaviors.

They form relationships on many levels just like humans do. They have some bonds that are genetically incorporated with their offspring. They also have bonds that they create loosely within their group just like humans do with casual acquaintances. They can have very close friendships too though as humans do.

They have a very creative side of their mind too that offers insight into their overall level of intelligence. They can learn a variety of things from humans including different languages and movements.
