Chimpanzee Feeding
Chimpanzee Feeding
The Chimpanzee has some very interesting habits when it comes to feeding. Due
to their eating methods and sources of food they are classified as omnivores. This means they eat both meat
and plants. They will also eat eggs of various other animals when they find them around. Birds often leave
eggs in nests where the Chimpanzees find them as they move through the trees.
Observing them get to termites shows their determination. They are able to use sticks to poke into the mounds
and access these living sources of food. They enjoy a variety of insects. They will lift up rocks and logs to get
to them. They know all the good hiding places!
Due to the thick hair on their body and their environment it isn’t uncommon for such insects to settle on them.
They will sit for hours grooming each other and feeding on what they find in the bodies of others around them. It
seems that certain Chimpanzees have a preference for different foods within a group of them. There are also dietary
differences among those that live in different regions.
Fruit is a delight for the Chimpanzee and they will eat it when it is in season. They also consume large amounts
of leaves, twigs, flowers, and seeds. This type of eating often gives the impression that they don’t consume meat
but that isn’t true. They eat it in addition to these other items.
In order to hunt for meat such as monkeys they have to cooperate with each other. They employ various strategies
though that allow them to do their hunting with ease in groups. They may be known to consume small Chimpanzees too
though when other food sources are scarce. It is usually the large males that will try to take them from their
protective mothers.
Soil is sometimes observed being consumed by Chimpanzees. They do so when they need to have more iron in their
diet. They can also consume it when they are trying to eat large amounts of termites from mounds. They tend to feed
twice a day – early morning and then late afternoon. However, they are known to hunt for food any time of the day
or night when necessary.
There are at least 13 different types of plants that the Chimpanzee feeds upon with medicinal properties. They
may do so when they are sick or even take them to other troop members. This is an enlightening observation about
how much these animals really know and remember.
Chimpanzees get lots of water that they need from the leaves and such that they consume. However, they also go
to bodies of water to be able to drink. They will use their hand to cup the water in it just like a human. They
have also been seen using folded up leaves to make a cup for sipping the water from.
How much does a Chimpanzee eat daily? They don’t seem to have a standard as so many animals do. Instead, their
metabolism and their intake seems to be varied just like that of humans. The adolescents and the adult males seem
to eat more than the females. When a female is pregnant or nursing though she will eat more. They take their time
eating and can extend it for several hours at a time so it is hard to acknowledge just how much one of them eats on
any given day.
The amount of food that happens to be available at any given time also affects how much they will consume. When
the fruits are offered they will likely eat more than in times of the year when it is dry and harder to find a
variety of foods.
