Chimpanzee Anatomy

chimpanzee anatomyThere are several things about the Chimpanzee anatomy that make it a remarkable animal. It has speed and agility due to the way in which it is designed. They also feature opposable large toes and thumbs. This assists with climbing, hunting, and even various gestures. They have very mobile shoulder joints that allow them the full range of movement we see.

Their long arms are very powerful so they are able to swing with ease through the branches of the trees. They have a very limber and agile body. They are able to bend the fingers so that they are similar to the design of hooks. This is what allows them to move so gracefully.

Even though they are thin animals they have amazing power in their upper body. This enables them to conserve energy when they move in the trees versus on land. However, they have a body that enables them to be able to get around both ways with ease. This too could be a part of evolution – being able to move about in the trees to avoid common predators on the ground.

The face of the Chimpanzee often gains lots of attention. They are able to offer a variety of facial expressions very similar to those humans take part in. The physical characteristics of this animal offer eyebrows that bulge and lips that stick out well over the chin. The skin on the face and ears isn’t covered with the hair that is on the rest of the body. The soles of the feet and the palms are also exposed.

They have a very long jaw with plenty of teeth. Due to their diverse diet they have some sharp incisors and also flat molars. They don’t have wrinkling of the enamel though like Orangutans do. They body is covered in hair but as the Chimpanzee gets older it will start to lose hair on the top of the head.

The senses of the Chimpanzee are very good. They have round ears that do pick up sound from a distance. They have wide nostrils with a keen sense of smell. Touch is very common among them to form their social bonds. They also touch to remove insects from each other during the grooming process. They also have great vision that allows them to see well both during the day and at night.

Many find it interesting that the Chimpanzee is able to walk on its knuckles. This is a process that is has no problem with though due to the overall design of the body. This gives them more speed and agility than when they are walking upright. When you view the body of a Chimpanzee you will see that the arms are much longer than the legs. This is why they able to move that way without any strain on the spine.

While the Chimpanzee anatomy has long been something that they are teased about, it is a design that works well for them. Experts believe that a great deal of their structure today has to do with the evolution process. When they separated from other primates millions of years ago they were able to continue changing and to develop what they needed to thrive in their given environment.

It is hopeful that one day we will find remains of early fossils that prove such a theory beyond the shadow of a doubt. Being able to compare the anatomy of them during that period of time to what we have today will show us how they transformed. DNA evidence will be used to prove that the findings are of the same species.
